Working with the community
As a global company we aim to reach out to our communities worldwide and to work with them for a better future.
On October 10, 2007, in celebration of our 10th birthday, 888.com held its first Charity Day in collaboration with two global charities. Charity Day focused on fundraising campaigns to support humanitarian and environmental projects worldwide..
The entire day was dedicated to charity and involved the company, all the employees who volunteered at their local charities, and our customers who joined us during the day playing Casino, Poker and Bingo to increase the proceeds..
At the end of the day a total of $100,000 was raised and donated to two global charities:
- EarthAction - the world’s largest network of organizations, policymakers, journalists and citizens working together for peace, justice and the environment, the EarthAction network includes more than 2,600 member organizations from 165 countries. earthaction.org
- World for World (WFWO) - established in 2002, WFWO focuses on improving the nutrition and living standards of some of the world’s poorest communities. worldforworld.org
888.com employees also volunteer at their regional local charity.
- In the UK, a poker tournament was organized and all funds were contributed to Macmillan Cancer Support.

888.com regularly contributes to the Macmillan Cancer Support Fund, and our employees take part in various activities and events organized by Macmillan.

- The employees of Gibraltar worked hard to create a garden and maintain the miniature zoo at the St Martin's School. 888.com’s employees also organized a competition with prizes for the best school logo illustrated by the children.
Since 1976, St. Martin’s School has been providing for the needs of special education students aged 5-16.
888.com has been actively involved in various activities at St. Martin’s. In addition to initiating the gardening project and a miniature zoo, 888.com’s employees are currently developing a new website for the school. The school website will accommodate the geographical, multi-ethnic and multi-linguistic needs of the school.

The Adele School in Antigua now enjoys a new vegetable garden thanks to the vigorous work of our employees and the older students of the school.
Adele School in Antigua is a government subsidized school for children who have mild to severe handicaps or learning disabilities.
888.com, its employees and a group of the school's older students are working together to provide the older students with life skills. The project entails creating a vegetable garden as part of the school's vocational program. The garden will give the children an opportunity to enjoy nature and acquire a practical skill. The school also hopes to grow enough produce to sell from time to time to help fund minor school projects.

In Israel the "Up To The Challenge" building received a face lift. Both employees and children worked together to paint the building, and the playground now has new goal posts and lights.
Employees of 888.com Israel volunteer at the Netanya-based non-profit charity “Derech HaEtgar”. The charity aims to help disadvantaged teenagers advance their education and skills by providing personal tutors, computer training, and otherwise answering their special needs.
888.com employees work with the children on several projects, including building a website in order to enhance the exposure of the charity in the long term.
Our wild cats
As part of our ongoing CSR initiatives in Spain, for the next 5 years 888.com Gibraltar will sponsor a pair of Lynxes, which are new additions to the Castellar Zoo in Andalucia, Spain. A competition among the employees was held to find suitable names; the names finally chosen were – Felix and Lynca. 888.com will be continually in touch with the zoo to visit Felix and Lynca and monitor their welfare.
Environment
Being an online company, 888.com leaves a small environmental footprint. However, we acknowledge the fact that even our most mundane actions may affect the environment in the future.
Our offline operations are primarily office-based, and our main environmental impact comes from transportation and the use of paper, lighting, heating, air-conditioning and IT. We have established a committee to deal with office paper use, waste, recycling and other relevant environmental issues.
The committee, led by the company’s Director of Global Purchasing and Operations, is responsible for overseeing new procedures, their practical implementation within the company, and the exploration of new ways to address the environmental topic.
Recycling
888.com is committed to recycling whenever possible:
-
Use of paper is where we impact on the environment most significantly and we are working hard to use less and recycle more. Of the total paper waste generated at our main sites, we recycle ~360kg every month which is 4320kg per year or 86.4% of our total paper stock.
-
We have placed recycling boxes for used batteries in areas easily accessible to our employees.
-
All our printers have ink cartridges which are all recyclable ink jets.
-
We are currently in the process of distributing duplex printers throughout the company.
-
During 2007 all used computers were either sold for dismantling and recycling or were donated to charities.
Energy consumption
A pilot was designed to use energy and resources as efficiently as possible was launched at the company’s head quarters. The pilot included the following implementations:
-
All light bulbs were replaced by PL lighting technology. This alone is equal to 80% light energy savings.
-
Sunshield stickers were placed on all windows in order to reduce air conditioning energy. This move has cut our average energy consumption by 5%-10%.
Due to the success of the pilot, both these actions will be implemented at all our offices during the coming year.
Travel
As a global business with offices worldwide, extensive employee traveling is another environmental challenge with which we are faced. In order to tackle this problem, we have invested in the best multi-media technology and encourage our employees to use teleconferencing facilities.
In town we provide our employees with company bus transportation to minimize the use of private vehicles. We have also provided bicycle locking stations in the parking lots and other bicycle facilities in order to encourage employees to ride to work.
